ISO 12100 (risk assessment)

ISO 12100 establishes the general principles of safety of machinery: hazard identification, risk estimation, risk evaluation, and risk reduction. It defines the three-step risk-reduction hierarchy — inherently safe design first, then safeguarding and complementary protective measures, then information for use. Robot-specific standards such as ISO 10218 are built on top of ISO 12100, and a documented risk assessment following its method is the starting point for any robot cell design.
